Kodi 17.x will run anything regardless of whether it is an android or librelec flavour.
So kodi is not the source of any problems you are experiencing. More likely, your assumption of bad or absent sources is correct.

I would look at the bestforkodi or koditips websites. They often review and produce lists of good add-ons including sports ones. You could also try the Mobdro Android app - but make sure you get it from the official site (which is, the name of the app dot to)
Apks are normally found in the Android download folder and can be deleted from there (e.g. by using a file explorer app) without deleting the installed applications.

As an update i looked at the reviews of the app on google play store and there were a lot of complaints about streaming quality. The app appears optimised for phones.
At any rate why not try a kodi sports stream. If better then you could ditch your subscription.

The general rule is the closer the better. The more distance the signal has to travel the more the risk of network latency. However, you may have to use foreign servers e.g. US ones, to view stuff blocked by UK ISPs
