Homescreen modified in the shell

Is it possible to modify what is displayed on the homescreen in the shell, is there a file that can be modified

You can get alternative launchers from the google play store. I use the Nova launcher. You can configure them how you want. I have a family photo as wallpaper and the apps i use most on the home screen (like on a phone)

As Nigelar said, you can download alternative launchers from the Play Store. Although how well they function depends on the specific launcher (some are designed with phone/touch-screen interfaces in mind moreso).
