Yes it works, but the flip side is that it shortens the life expectancy of the hard drive or flash memory as it is contentiously writing data to the device.
Leave well alone. Thats my advice. You know that the main cause of buffering is contention at the host end which you can do little about - we've told you that in other threads. Just accept it. End.
Dbmc like kodi has lots and lots of advanced settings.

Which particular advanced setting were you looking to tinker with?
The only advanced settings modification i would recommend for buffering is either the option in Echo Wizard or Ares Wizard. Ares i feel is the better option as it calculates the settings based on your devices available free memory and resources.
Don't use zero cache on boxes with less then 8GB as it will cause it to freeze or crash. Then the only way around is to do a factory reset.
Do as above or just try deleting advanced XML and see how it goes.
