Hat tip and full credit to @angela (see https://www.droidboxforums.com/threads/kodi-17-on-4-4-2.9654/ ) for posting about Kodi 17 on KitKat first. I was asked to pop a new thread into this section of the forum, so here we go:

Kodi 17 requires Android 5 or higher to run. If your device runs Android 4.4, then Kodi 16.1 and DBMC 16.3.0 are the latest compatible versions. See https://droidbox.co.uk/blog/the-kodi-17-faq/ and https://droidbox.co.uk/blog/its-here-kodi-17-or-bust/ for more information.

Recently, @sean99 posted over at https://droidboxforums.com/threads/ftmc.9481/ about a modded version of Kodi 16.1 that had updated Python modules, meaning more HTTPS hosted content would be accessible.

However, if accurate, it appears that someone has managed to get Kodi 17 working on devices running 4.4 .
https://www.tech2guides.co.uk/how-to-install-kodi-17-on-android-below-5-0/ has more details.
It has been quickly tested on a T8-S running Android 4.4.2 and seems to work well.

If you have the time to spare and the inclination to experiment, these two options (modified 16.1 with updated Python modules or Kodi 17 modded to work with earlier than Lollipop based devices) could well help you out.

My understanding is that both these apps have their own unique data directories, so you may not need to uninstall Kodi. Just don't forget that setting up these apps with add-ons will take up more storage space, so make sure you leave at least 1Gb free if possible.

Have tested out MyGica 17 on the go projector 4.4.4 f/w and find it hit and miss regarding stability on a lower spec f/w, have been using FTMC for the past couple of weeks with decent results on the same. Ebox have released a modded version of MyGica 17 with confluence skin as default also install from unknown sources enabled as default. Have only tested this out for 2 days but it looks and streams well:- https://goo.gl/CtRBjZ

Anyone having any issues (blackscreen) after booting up any of these kodi 17 forks for lower f/w devices just back out of kodi and clear cache in android settings. Restart kodi
