The Intel® Driver & Support Assistant keeps your system up-to-date by providing tailored support and hassle-free updates for most of your Intel hardware.

  • What is the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant?
    • The Intel® Driver & Support Assistant is a re-architected version of the Intel® Driver Update Utility.
      Improvements allow it to:
      • Easily identify drivers installed by Intel and third-parties.
      • Scan for driver updates as well as system and device information.
      • Integrate several Intel support tools within a web based application (This includes the Intel® Driver Update Utility, and will soon include the Intel® System Identification Utility, and the Intel® System Support Utility).
  • Why is it important to keep your drivers updated?
    • Updated drivers allow you to use new programs and new hardware.
You should update your drivers if:
      • You have a new device.
      • You see an error message that tells you to update to a new driver.
      • You see problems while using hardware.
You may not need to update your drivers if:
      • Your system is working correctly.
      • You experience issues with the speed of your machine. Updated drivers do not upgrade slow computers.
      • You already have specific drivers for your device, and the latest driver is generic.
  • Is there a fee for using the Intel Driver & Support Assistant?
    • There is no fee associated with the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. It is available for your convenience at no cost.

Anything in these Intel drivers that gives me control over the fan on the CK1 I just purchased?

The device hovers around 55 degrees at idle but the fan tends to kick in only a few degrees more.

As a living room media box, the fan noise is not going to make my wife very content.

Does it find anything on the Fans tab?
Nope. Quite happily reporting the HDD and CPU temp, but no app I've tried so far seems to have any recognition of a fan, let alone what temp it kicks in at or what RPM to spin up to.

The only practical fix to the fan being on too often is to change the power management setting for cooling from active to passive. Unfortunately this throttles the cpu and computer performance dips to about 50%. Though, that's still powerful enough for most tasks.

Have you tried any other fan control software?
Yes, no software does fan control. Tried all the known tools.

However, Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility and ThrottleStop both work well to limit the CPU and limit the fan from powering up. Also, have put the device on its side so that airflow out the bottom of the device is better.
