How can I add cheats? I know there is a section for them, but I have no idea how to add or even select them.

I had a quick look on the Gameboy emulator and it supports Game Genie and Game Shark codes. These are codes for a hardware accessory available on the original consoles. You can find the codes for these at http://www.gamegenie.com/ . For other emulators it may be the same devices and Action Replay. A google search should bring up some sites for these codes. Hope that helps.
