If you are not able to get the Home screen of the Box then you need to perform Factory reset on your Box to resolve the issue and there is no other way to fix it.

If you mean Power On/Off button of Box which turns Blue when you turn Box On and Red when you Turn it off then yes you are doing right by pressing the power On/Off Button which Shuts Down the Box properly.
It is always better to turn off your box and not leaving it on standby for long, if you want to leave it on standby then i would suggest to EXIT Kodi properly so that it will prevent Kodi from creating cache or temp files.
OpenELEC is currently running on Kodi V15.2 so most of the builds will not be compatible with Kodi 15.2.
I would suggest you to install Addons individually on OpenELEC side as most of the Addons are compatible with Kodi 15.2
The Box doesn't comes with preinstalled Hard Drive but you can separately buy an SATA HDD from DroidBOX Accessories page and then install it on your DroidBOX.
