can anyone recommend a good music app for playing stored music, something that shows album covers etc and let's you make playlists? Thanks

Have you tried Kodi yet? Playlists can be created/used. http://kodi.wiki/view/Adding_music_to_the_library should help.

Hopefully others will be along soon with suggestions for other apps, I mentioned a couple to someone else today over at https://www.droidboxforums.com/posts/26830/ , but don't know about cover art etc with them.

Soundcloud, you can also do this on deezer app.

You can also download spotify either free or premium as an android app from google play. I use it extensively (free version)
